Gretchen Magers (1964- )
Gretchen Magers has been involved with tennis in many ways for much of her life. A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she began her competitive career when she was eleven, a career that would take her to the biggest stages in tennis. Gretchen was a four-time All-American at Trinity University where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education. She was the 1982 World Junior Champion and won the 1983 NCAA doubles championship. During her pro career, she won three singles titles, six doubles titles and was quarterfinalist at the French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. Magers continues to compete in the 35 and over events at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. She has competed in three International World Senior Championships and has captained the gold medal U.S. team at the ITF World Championships in Durban, South Africa. Gretchen began teaching tennis at the Fairbanks Ranch Country Club in 1992 after retiring from the pro tour. She ran the social events, tournaments and coordinated catering. Other teaching stints have been at the Lomas Santa Fe Country Club, the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club and for the last thirteen years the Peninsula Tennis Club. From 1992 to 1996 she served as the International Tennis Director for the Special Olympics. Magers administered the USTA “Grow the Game” initiative for San Diego County, overseeing the free lesson program and tracking new entrants into the sport from 2002 to 2004. She has coached Division I tennis at SDSU, high school tennis at Our Lady of Peace and is now the women’s tennis coach at San Diego City College. Gretchen also serves as President of the San Diego Beach Tennis Association. She resides in Point Loma with her husband of 24 years, Steve Magers and their children Matthew, Marin and Katie.
