Jeanne Doyle Garrett (1927- )

A native San Diegan, Jeanne began her long tennis career in the eighth grade, when she won her first title at the Harper Ink Tournament. By the time she graduated from Point Loma High School in 1945, the following titles were added to her resume: San Diego Athlete of the Year, Captain of the SoCal Junior Wightman Cup Team, #1 U.S. junior doubles ranking, and #2 U.S. junior singles ranking. One of her greatest honors was to entertain servicemen at military camps and bases by playing exhibitions with the great Bill Tilden. She played collegiately at SDSU and at the University of Arizona. She was the Ojai Intercollegiate champion in 1950, singles and doubles. In 1955, Jeanne earned her MA in physical education at UC Berkeley. Returning to San Diego, she taught and coached tennis at the YMCA , Cal Western University, and ultimately for twenty years at the San Diego Yacht Club. As a senior tennis player, Jeanne has won 47 national doubles titles for a lifetime total of 50 national championships!
