Michael Chang (1972- )

Perhaps the youngest male (an 8th grader at Oak Crest Junior High) to have ever won the San Diego CIF high-school championships, defeating older brother Carl in the final. From there, he went on to win the National Boys 18. Not yet 16, Michael dropped out of high school and turned pro. In 1987, he became the youngest male to win a main draw match at the US Open when he defeated Paul McNamee in four sets in the first round. At age 17 in 1989, he became the youngest grand slam champion with his French Open title defeating Ivan Lendl in the Rd. of 16 and Stefan Edberg in the final . Later that year he also became the youngest-ever men’s player ranked in the top five in the world. Michael’s professional tennis career came to a close in his 2003 Farewell Tour but continues to impact the international community as a tennis ambassador and through his active participation in the Chang Family Foundation. He makes his home in Mission Viejo, California.
