William Scripps Kellogg (1897-1985)
Perhaps for San Diegans, Mr. Kellogg’s greatest contribution was building the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. It has been the stage for countless historic events since it was built in 1935. The LJBTC has continued with a rich tradition of being host to several USTA National tournaments, the venerable Pacific Coast Doubles tournament, and several professional events. Bobby Riggs, Pancho Gonzalez, Ted Schroeder, Jack Kramer, and Bill Tilden all played at the Beach Club. Mr. Kellogg and the late Perry T. Jones ran tennis in Southern California for close to half a century. He also served on the Committee of Management of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and, also, was the longest serving USLTA Regional Vice President for the Pacific Region. Mr. Kellogg was inducted into the All England Club (AEC) as an Honorary Lifetime Member. He was also the first Federation Cup Captain. His legacy has continued and promises to do so for generations to come!
