                         MINUTES OF SDDTA GENERAL MEETING APRIL 10, 2007

Next meeting is a General Meeting on June 12, 2007 at 7:00 pm, BTC Clubhouse

 

 

I.                   CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 7:05 pm by President Anne Podney. Members present were: Roberto Ancira; Mike Bauer; Larry Belinsky; Rich Castiglia; Fred Circo; Andrew Cretella; Virginia Glass; Geoff Griffin; Mary Alice Hiller; Steve Kappes; Roz King; Barbara Kingston; Jim Lackritz; Richard Neher; Jim Phelps; Anne Podney; Ben Press; Robin Rodger; Anne Russ; Sherman Schneller; Suella Steel;  Lesley Waite.

 

II.                MINUTES: It was MSP to accept the minutes of March 13, 2007 with one correction to the report on Tournament evaluations. Minutes should reflect that 10 new evaluations are scheduled for this year.

 

III.             PRESIDENTS REPORT: The USTA National Family of Year is the Barth family from our District. Anne received a very nice thank you note from the Super Senior Captain, Carolyn Cassel, for financial support to help her team attend Nationals.

 

IV.              TREASURER’S REPORT: Treasurer’s report was MSP. The Treasurer made a year end report of the 2006 Balance Sheet and the Profit & Loss vs. Actuals. Copies were distributed to the Board Members.

 

V.                 COMMITTEE REPORTS:

 

A.         Activities: Dinner for 2008 is scheduled for Friday, January 18. Barbara will confirm with Richard Lederer his commitment to speak.

 

B.         Family Day Tennis: Next event is at Helix High School on Saturday April 28th, 1-3 pm. Although the last Tennis Day had good attendance, the City College location is a difficult site—it is hard to access the courts, not many students participated and the follow up is Drop-In classes are difficult to organize at this location.

 

C.        Tennis Fest: Geoff showed the Board Members the tee-shirt logo design. Expecting 900-1000 attendees at this year’s event on May 6th. Local pros have been very responsive. Their names and clubs will be listed on the brochure and the website. A brochure will be handed out to all attendees along with goodie bags. Volunteers are needed on Saturday, May 5th at 6 pm at Balboa Clubhouse to help stuff the goodie bags.

 

D.       Multi-cultural: An event at Otay Lakes is planned for May 12th. In November a new video on PonchoGonzales will be shown.

 

E.        Leagues: Spring USTA leagues are ready to start.

 

F.        Newsletter: May 21st is the deadline for articles. June 1st is the deadline for the Hall of Fame insert which will include the names of the recipients

 

 

G.        Tournament Evaluations: Discussion regarding reimbursement of tournament fees from the District to tournament directors. Anne read the list of suggested requirements for tournament directors to meet to receive their fees back. A tournament director’s meeting will be scheduled for a mid-day on a Monday to see if this will draw more folks than the night-time meetings have in the past. Roz reported that so far there have been no problems reported in the evaluations that have been submitted to the District this year.

 

H.        District Tournament: Geoff reported that Roberto Ancira will be donating $500 for sponsorship of the tournament.

 

I.           Hall Of Fame: MSP to approve the selection of Larry Belinsky, Jim Lackritz, Robin Harris, Ben Press and Colleen Farrell to the Selection Committee. Larry will e-mail a copy of the list of nominees to board members. Five individuals will be selected this year for the Hall of Fame. Anticipating approximately 100 attendees to the Award Dinner/Reception which will again be held during the District Championship Tournament. Budgeted $15.00 for the dinner per person. 

 

J.           Wheelchair Tennis: Sherman reported that the Hendrickson Wheelchair Tournament is scheduled for May 19th & 20th at Balboa. Many donations have been given. Anne mentioned that the US Open Wheelchair needs our support and sponsors.

 

VI.              OLD BUSINESS: none

 

VII.           NEW BUSINESS: Anne reported that the Junior Awards Banquet is April 29th 6-8 pm at the Barnes Center. Anne received a request from UCSD to again support the intramural team that qualified for the National Championship which is held in North Carolina this year. It was MSP to again give $400.00. Roz gave a short report on her attendance at the National USTA meeting. Board Members requested that a copy of the board meeting dates be put on the District website. Anne will request that Jeff add this information to the website.

 

VIII.    ADJOURNMENT: The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 pm
