MINUTES OF SDDTA GENERAL MEETING AUGUST 14, 2007

Next meeting is a General meeting on October 9, 2007 at 7:00 pm, BTC Clubhouse

 

 

I.                   CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 7:05 pm by President Anne Podney. Members present were: Robert Bacon; Mike Bauer; Larry Belinsky; Rich Castiglia; Fred Circo; Andrew Cretella; Virginia Glass; Mary Alice Hiller; Carol Jory; Steve Kappes; Roz King; Barbara Kingston; Jim Lackritz; Anne Podney; Ben Press; Robin Rodger; Bill Rennie; Anne Russ; Susan Delos Santos; Suella Steel; Lesley Waite; and Fran Wakefield.

 

II.                MINUTES: It was MSP to accept the minutes of June12, 2007 meeting with one correction. Change the name Andy Gordon to Alex Gordon.

 

III.             PRESIDENTS REPORT: Anne requested volunteers to sign-up for the U.S. Open Wheelchair Tournament in September. A sheet was passed around to the Directors. Anne thanked Steve Kappes for his e-mail letter of thanks to Directors regarding his experience at the SCTA Hall of Fame function in L.A. Steve was a great representative of the District. Anne reminded Directors that the Youth Tennis Gala will be held on August 18.

 

IV.              TREASURER’S REPORT: Treasurer’s report was MSP. A reminder: The monthly financial statements are now available on the website and are emailed to all the Directors prior to each meeting.

 

V.                 COMMITTEE REPORTS:

 

A.           Newsletter: Next issue is in November. Lesley will contact folks after Labor Day regarding articles. .

 

B.          Tournaments: The District Tournament begins in two weeks. Fran passed around a sign up sheet for volunteers to help at the Tournament Desk

 

C.          Tournament Evaluation: Tournament Evaluation Committee report circulated to Directors. Letters sent to Peninsula and La Jolla Rec. Tournament Directors regarding some issues at their tournaments. Other tournaments are being evaluated. There is growth shown in most of the big local tournaments. The National Evaluation Committee is recommending increasing the point value of intersectionals to increase participation. There are plans to change the men’s venue. Southern California has announced that they are not supporting the men’s teams because of location, surface and low participation.

 

D.        Hall Of Fame: All is in place for the ceremony August 25th at 4:00pm. The cabinets are full of memorabilia from the new inductees.  There is also room to continue to house some of the items from last year’s inductees.

 


E.         Nominations: MSP to accept Susan Delos Santos as a new board member. She represents the South County/National City area. Directors welcomed Susan aboard. There are no openings on the Board at present.

 

F.         Community Programs: Steve Kappes reported that a Family Day was held at the Pala Indian Reservation in July. It was moderately successful. There may possibly be a multi-reservation Family Day in hopes of a larger turn-out sometime in the future. Next Family Day is scheduled for late September in the Santee, Terrasanta or Carmel Valley area.

 

G.        Multicultural: Encanto fair scheduled for August 15th.

 

H.        Activities/Awards: Awards meeting scheduled for Monday, September 10th at noon. Please e-mail suggestions to the District Office. Richard Lederer is not available to speak at the annual Awards Dinner.

 

I.           Yearbook: Lesley will contact the various contributors after the award recipients have been selected.  Letter will go out regarding ads after the District Tournament. Deadline for artwork for ads is October 15th.

 

J.           Wheelchair Tennis: M.A. Hillier announced that a One up/One down tournament is scheduled for Oct. 28th at Balboa. It is also a fundraiser for San Diego Adaptive Sports Foundation. She also mentioned wanting to receive a grant from the District to support a Junior Wheelchair Team Tennis program at Barnes. She was asked to present a written grant proposal to the Grant Committee before the General Board membership would consider event sponsorship. It was suggested that Sherman Schneller, our Wheelchair Representative on the Board, should be consulted as well as Jim Yoes, who teaches wheelchair tennis at the Barnes Center.

 

VI.                   NEW BUSINESS: Bill Kellogg has put in a bid for the Davis Cup Finals in December. Although there are several things that have to fall in place for the Finals to be held in the U.S., the bid and search for financial support has to begin now. A $400,000 commitment is needed for USTA to consider San Diego as the location. Southern Cal is committed to $10,000. It was MSP for the San Diego District to commit $5000 toward the $400,000 required payment to USTA. This is contingent upon San Diego being awarded the bid.

 

VII.           OLD BUSINESS:

 

a. Acura Classic: Volunteers staffed the booth the entire tournament. All went well and Jeff Anderson did an outstanding job.

b. Community Tennis Stickers: Have been received and are available in the office. They were given out at the Acura Classic.

 

VIII.        ADJOURMENT: The meeting was adjourned at 8:05pm.
