
MINUTES OF SDDTA GENERAL MEETING, AUGUST 9, 2011
Next meeting is a General Meeting, October 11, 2011 at 7:00pm, BTC Clubhouse
I. CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 7:01 pm by President Geoff Griffin. Members present were: Mike Bauer, Larry Belinsky, Cassondra Caesar, Fred Circo, Geoff Griffin, Mary Lou Harris, Fran Hunter, Mary Alice Hillier, Carol Jory, Steve Kappes, Sandie Kindred, Jim Lackritz, Angel Lopez, Fran McCloskey, Carolyn Nichols, Anne Podney, Doug Purvis, Shelley Susman, Suella Steele and Lesley Waite.
II. MINUTES: It was MSP to accept the minutes of the general meeting on June 14, 2011.
III. PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Geoff Griffin thanked all board members who helped out at the USTA membership booth for the Mercury Insurance Open at La Costa. A special thanks went to Lesley Waite for organizing volunteers from league players and captains. Geoff mentioned many events at the tournament were successful, including Latino Night, Military Appreciation Night and Kids Day. Geoff also reported American Express awarded Ben Press a trip to the US Open for his many accomplishments through the Greater San Diego City Tennis Council. Geoff continued with an update on Zozi and said it has been successful for him. He is also trying to get more clubs involved in using this system to get more players interested in tennis. So far, Shelley Susman has an event planned the Surf & Turf.
IV. TREASURER’S REPORT: The Balance Sheet and Profit & Loss statements were emailed to attendees. Steve Kappes reported the financials are on solid ground and we have a strong cash position inspite of the volatility in the market. Steve also reported a line item omission of payroll taxes was inadvertently left out of the financial statement. Statements will be amended with the item added to reflect correct status of liability. The report was MSP. Steve along with other board members attended the SCTA Hall of Fame dinner and award ceremony in Los Angeles where 8 players were inducted including Billie Jean King, Dick Leach, Kathy May Fritz, Pat Canning Todd, Dorothy Head Knode, Franklin Johnson, Billy Martin and Hugh Stewart.
V. COMMITTEE REPORTS:
a. Activities: No report
b. Awards: A committee meeting is scheduled for September 12th at noon in the BTC Clubhouse. The committee welcomes nominations.
c. By Laws: No report
d. Community Programs: Shelley Susman said the Poway FTD was well attended. She is looking at Montgomery HS to schedule a Family Tennis Day.
e. Diversity and Inclusion: Committee chair was not in attendance but Angel Lopez mentioned that he had been named chair for the SoCal Division of Diversity & Inclusion committee. Goal of the USTA and Angel’s vision is to encourage and promote tennis to more players of Spanish descent in our local region.

h. Finance/Budget: No report
i. Grant: No report
j. Hall of Fame: Larry Belinsky reported all is on track for inductee presentation on Saturday, August 27th with Paume Café catering the reception after the ceremony on stadium court. Larry said the cabinets are all ready to go and we now have 30 honorees. He also said we got good advertising at the Mercury Insurance Open tournament and thanked Jeff Anderson for the SDTHOF banner. Programs for the HOF ceremony and reception are in production. Volunteers are needed to help with checking people in. It was suggested that we have the ceremony video taped and may be used for later purposes.
k. Memberships: Geoff Griffin reported there were new memberships aquired at the Mercury Insurance Open tournament along with renewals.
l. Leagues: Lesley Waite indicated the Fall USTA leagues will start soon and also reported that San Diego is 11th in Flex Leagues nationwide.
m. Military Outreach: Adopt a Unit is going well with help from the USTA. Balboa Tennis Club locally is collecting over 300 care packages. Miramar has requested a Family Tennis Day for August 28th.
n. Nominations: A committee meeting is scheduled for October. Referrals should be sent to the committee.
o. Newsletter: No report
p. Rankings: No report
q. Sanctions/Scheduling: Jim Lackritz mentioned that non-sanctioned tournaments are now using Tennis Link for registrations and collecting fees.
r. Tennis Fest: No report
s. Tournament: Tony Perez and the committee met and it was decided committee members will work the desk during the tournament. Carol Bunker will be supplying additional volunteers. Sponsors are Angel Lopez, Ascent Real Estate, SDTHOF, Graphic Interfaces, Kashi and Powerade. Umpires and Referees are all in place.

u. Umpires Liaison: No report
v. USPTA Liaison: No report
w. Wheelchair: M.A. Hillier reported the Barnes Tournament had a good turnout with approximately 30 participants.
x. Yearbook: No report
y. YTSD Liaison: Anne Podney said the YTSD Gala, formerly called the Match Point Ball, is scheduled for November 6th. Additional information will be provided in the future.
VI. OLD BUSINESS: None
VII. NEW BUSINESS: Shelley Susman brought up the death of one of Mountain View Sports & Racquet Club’s members Jaquetta DeVoe. And asked if the SDDTA would consider a scholarship fund. It was decided that if a fund was set up by others the SDDTA would discuss it at that time.
VIII. ADJOURNMENT: The meeting was adjourned at 7:56 pm
