
MINUTES OF SDDTA GENERAL
MEETING TUESDAY, MARCH 9, 2010

I. CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 7 pm by President Geoff Griffin. Members present were: Bob Bacon, Mike Bauer, Larry Belinsky, Cassondra Caesar, Andrew Cretella, Virginia Glass, Geoff Griffin, M.A. Hillier, Carol Jory, Steve Kappes, Sandie Kindred, Jim Lackritz, Anne Podney, Bill Rennie, Anne Russ, Suella Steel, Shelley Susman, Lesley Waite, Tiffany Worst, Juan Villanueva.
II. MINUTES: Correction of January meeting nimutes item #5 to “San Diego Flex Leagues.
III. PRESIDENTS REPORT: New member Shelly Susman was introduced. Geoff also welcomed and recognized Cynthia Lang, President of Mt. View Sports and Racquet Club and Jacquetta Devoe, Vice President.
IV. TREASURER’S REPORT: P&L statement and Balance sheet were emailed for review. Steve Kappes predicts an increase in expenses due to increases in grant allocations and decreases in interest and dividend income. He recommended that the 10k Merrill Lynch CD coming to term this month be reinvested in a six month bank CD. It was MSP to accept the report and recommendations.
V. COMMITTEE REPORTS:
A. Activities: It was suggested this committee meet to make recommendations on ways to improve the Annual Meeting program. The president asked the board to email Barbara Kingston with suggestions.
B. Community Program: The Family Tennis Day program has linked adults into entry level league play. A large Family Tennis Day is scheduled in San Marcos at the Woodland Park courts on Sunday, March 14th. These courts were a joint resurfacing project with the SDDTA and GSDCTC. A Family Tennis Day will offered at the Mt. View Sports and Racquet Club utilizing site pros along with a District coordinator. Sandie Kindred clarified that funds are usually limited to $400 per event. Should more pros be used it will result in less pay per pro. Site pros are not usually paid as these events will generate income resulting from follow up Drop In classes and potential other lessons. These programs are only offered at facilities open to the public. The Park and Rec. Dept charges fees for court usage. M.A. Hillier reported there’s a great response in participation and volunteers for the Wounded Warrior Military Program. The group meets once a month at BTC. More PR and photo opportunities are pending for this program.
C. Facilities: Bob Bacon asked the board for new tennis balls for community colleges. Geoff said he would provide five cases.
D. Grant: Anne Podney reported recommendations to the board.
1. Beach Tennis San Diego be awarded $1000 for 2010 expenses. MSP.
2. World Team Tennis be allocated $1500 to be used for teams to pay entry fees for NQ WTT Nationals. The committee also recommends this be a line item in the District budge for subsequent years. MSP.
3. The Grant committee recommends $1500 be allocated for the Girls 18 National Championships and this be a budget line item for subsequent years. A motion was so made. An amendment to increase this amount to $3500 failed because of lack of a second. The original motion was MSP. The Grant committee can meet as needed for additional monies if the need arises.
4. The committee recommends $1000 for two $500 college scholarships, one of which shall primarily be based on financial need. Both shall be named the San Diego District Tennis Association Scholarship. The President of the SDDTA will appoint a District board member to sit on this YTSD Scholarship Selection Committee. The committee recommends that this be a budget line item for subsequent years. MSP. Cassondra Caesar was appointed to the scholarship committee.
5. The committee recommends that up to $5000 be added to the Family Tennis Days and Drop In classes budget line item. This money will be used for the increase in “family” programs coordinated by the District. MSP.
6. The Grant committee does not recommend funds be given to YTSD for financial assistance for junior programs in San Diego.
E. Hall of Fame: Larry Belinsky reported the selection committee has narrowed the list down to twenty. They will now select down to five.
F. Multicultural Participation: Virginia Glass reported there are projects pending.
G. Nominations: Sandie Kindred reported Brenda Phillips resigned leaving one opening.
H. Sanctions & Scheduling: Larry Belinsky recommended that the District website have a “how to get a District ranking” link.
I. Tennis Fest: The event will be on Sunday, May 2nd.
J. Tournament Evaluation: Anne Russ reported the committee has met and selected ten tournaments to evaluate this year.
K. Leagues: Lesley Waite said the new ratings is a source of discussion.
L. Yearbook: Larry Belinsky requested email contacts be listed after the member clubs listing in the yearbook.
VI. OLD BUSINESS: Travel policy unchanged.
VII. NEW BUSINESS: Using USTA member address and email lists for other charity organizations is against policy.
VIII. ADJOURNMENT: The meeting was adjourned at 8:30pm.
