

Minutes of San Diego District Tennis Association
General Board Meeting, Oct. 9, 2007
I. CALL TO ORDER: Meeting was called to order at 7:00 by President Anne Podney. Those attending were: Mike Bauer, Larry Belinsky, Cassondra Caesar, Fred Circo, Andrew Cretella, Don Daniels, Virginia Glass, Geoff Griffin, Steve Kappes, Sandie Kindred, Roz King, Barbara Kingston, Jim Lackritz, Rich Neher, Anne Podney, Ben Press, Bill Rennie, Robin Rodger, Susan Delos Santos, Sherman Schneller, Bill Stack, Suella Steel, Lesley Waite and Fran Wakefield.
II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: It was MSP to approve the minutes of August 14, 2007 with no corrections.
III. PRESIDENT’S REPORT:
A. The year-end evaluation of the USTA Community Development Grant for 2007 is completed and Jeff, Sandie and Anne are working on the grant for 2008 which is due in mid-November.
B. The SDDTA provided over 70 adult volunteers for the US Open Wheelchair tournament at Barnes and SCTA thanked us for our support.
IV. TREASURER’S REPORT: Mike Bauer presented the report which had been previously
emailed to Board members. It was MSP to approve the Treasurer’s report.
V. COMMITTEE REPORTS
A. GRANTS:
1. $500 was approved for Virginia Glass to cover travel fees to the International Hall of Fame ceremony honoring Althea Gibson. MSP.
2. The Grant Committee recommended that the SDDTA not fund the Run & Roll tournament presented by Adaptive Sports as it is not a USTA related event.
3. The Grant Committee recommended that the SDDTA not fund the Beach Tennis Try-It Day since the sponsoring group is not a non-profit and the event is not a USTA event.
4. A grant of $3300 to the Tennis Council was approved. This money is to be used for court repairs at Tierrasanta Tennis Club, provided they open their facility for a Family Tennis Day and Drop In tennis programs. MSP.
5. The Grant Committee recommended that the SDDTA not fund new brochures for the Tennis Council.
6. The Grant Committee tabled a request from the Tennis Council to fund court repairs at Mountain View Park in Escondido. It was noted that proper grant request forms were not filled out and submitted and that the Director of Parks and Recreation in Escondido has not been cooperative in allowing FTD and Drop in Tennis events at Escondido facilities.
B. ACTIVITIES: Logan Jenkins will be the speaker at the District Annual Dinner meeting in January.
C. AWARDS: The following people were selected to receive the 2007 District awards:
Male Player of the Year: Alex Magtanong
Female Player of the Year: Roz King
Coach/Pro of the Year: Andy Volkert
Sportsman of the Year: Tony Ybarra
Sportswoman of the Year: Nancy Abler-Sanchez
Family of the Year: Ben Press Family
Community Service Award: Pat Mason
Tournament of the Year: Rancho Penasquitos
Club of the Year: Coronado Tennis Assoc.
Sponsor of the Year: C & H Court Tech
D. NEWSLETTER/YEARBOOK: Newsletter gone to press. Deadline for Yearbook copy is Oct. 15.
E. DISTRICT TOURNAMENT: Geoff Griffin reported that he and Fran Wakefield have retired as Tournament Director and Assistant Tournament Director. A discussion was held about possible ways to replace them for next year’s tournament. It was suggested that we get mailing lists from the SCTA for the age divisions to notify players that this tournament is a “sectional” event. Lesley Waite will put this into “Inside Tennis” and SCTA newsletters.
F. TOURNAMENT EVALUATION: No new tournaments were reviewed. All seemed to be running smoothly. Complaints about the Metro were being reviewed.
G. RANKING: Jim Lackritz announced that November is ranking month and that he is working on the scheduling for 2008.
H. COMMUNITY TENNIS: Sandie Kindred presented a review of the very successful recent FTD in South Bay at the Bonita Vista Middle School (done in conjunction with the South Bay YMCA). 50 people attended (more than 50% were Hispanic).
I. MULTICULTURAL: Virginia Glass reported on the Encanto Street Fair. She was asked to submit a list of names of those who had visited the booth. Susan Delos Santos is planning programs for 2008 to be done in primarily Filipino/Hispanic neighborhoods. Cassondra Caesar noted that there will be a March program highlighting Pancho Gonzales.
J. WHEELCHAIR: Sherman Schneller reported that the Hendrickson Tournament went well. It had 31 players.
VI. New Business: It was mentioned that Tom Hagadorn, former USD coach, has leukemia. Bill Stack announced that San Diego has lost 75 courts. Lesley Waite announced that the Men’s 3.5 League from North County and the Women’s 2.5 team from Stoneridge both won their national NTRP championships. Roz King reported on the USTA Annual meeting and mentioned some ranking changes and a new division of play: Husband/Wife 140 year (combined ages).
VII. ADJOURNMENT: Meeting was adjourned at 8:05 p.m.
