From Navy Service to Tennis Service: The Story of Steve Kappes

When Steve Kappes realized contact sports did not fit, he picked up a tennis racquet and never looked back. What started with bouncing balls against a department store wall turned into a passion that traveled with him through 24 years of Navy service.
On ships and in ports around the world, Steve could walk into any tennis facility with a bag on his shoulder and instantly find community. That feeling of belonging is what many racquet sports professionals and players are searching for today.
After leaving the Navy, Steve discovered the Racquet Sports Professional Association (RSPA), which helped him turn his love of tennis into meaningful service. Through certification, education, and events, he found mentors, built a powerful network, and uncovered ways to use tennis as a force for good.
Today, Steve is known as the Wounded Warrior tennis guy. For 15 years, he has led a volunteer program in San Diego that uses tennis as rehabilitation and community reintegration for wounded, ill, and injured service members and veterans. Everything is free for participants and powered by volunteers from the tennis community.
He also serves as executive director for the RSPA's San Diego division and leads the San Diego Veterans Tennis Classic, combining his military experience and tennis leadership to create opportunities for players while honoring service members.
